Telstra Launches 3G HSPA Products

Sierra Wireless and Telstra announced that the Sierra Wireless AirCard(R) 880U USB modem and the AirCard 880E ExpressCard are now commercially available in Australia to provide high-speed mobile access to Telstra's Next G(TM) HSPA network.

With the Sierra Wireless AirCard 880U USB modem and AirCard 880E ExpressCard operating on Telstra's Next G HSPA network, customers will be able to send email attachments, upload information, and transmit data at peak network speeds up to 1.9 megabits per second (Mbps) - significantly faster than was possible with earlier network technologies. This improvement in uplink speed, combined with peak network downlink speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps, allows for new applications such as web conferencing and live video, and significantly improves the user experience for customers working over a virtual private network.

Telstra will market the Sierra Wireless AirCard 880E as the Telstra Turbo 7 Series Express Card and BigPond Wireless Broadband 7.2 Mobile Card. The Sierra Wireless AirCard 880U will be marketed as the Telstra Turbo 7 Series Modem and BigPond Wireless Broadband USB Mobile Card.

Telstra's Next G(TM) network upgrade will also benefit customers operating an AirCard 875 PC card, which can be upgraded to take advantage of the increased downlink speed with a simple firmware update.

"The move to HSPA technology offers great benefits for mobile data customers, who will find that the significantly improved upload speed available makes sending large email attachments, for example, to be much faster," said Dan Schieler, senior vice president, Worldwide Sales for Sierra Wireless. "Telstra has shown extraordinary market leadership in quickly transitioning to new wireless technology, and we are pleased to support its deployment of HSPA and to continue to improve the mobile broadband experience for customers in Australia."

Holly Kramer, Group Managing Director, Telstra Product Management said, "Telstra is pleased to be partnering with Sierra Wireless to launch the first 7.2 data cards in the Australian market, bringing the benefits of the fastest national mobile broadband network to 98.8 percent of the Australian population."

The AirCard 880U USB modem and the AirCard 880E ExpressCard are fully compatible with HSPA, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS, and GSM network technologies on all frequencies currently used worldwide. To ensure there is always enough power support to handle peak or fringe area transmission requirements without compromising performance, the AirCard 880U USB modem includes an internal battery that supplements the power from the USB port when extra power is required.

Sony Ericsson S500i Review

With the Walkman and Cyber-shot phones taking a back seat, Sony Ericsson indulges its design whims in the new range of style phones. The S500i slider is the first to flourish

It’s interesting to see Sony Ericsson concentrate fully on the more fashion-orientated side of the market. After bombarding us with Walkman and Cyber-shot phones, the manufacturer has resurrected its T-series along with the new S-series to showcase its designer side.

Of course, Sony Ericsson has dallied with the fashion world with mixed results, with the Z610i mirrored 3G clamshell and, let us not forget, injected the thin gene into the 9.4-inch thick gossamer W880i Walkman phone. But now it’s set to walk the style mile with a new trio of handsets including the metallic-hewn prepay Sony Ericsson T250i, the high-end candybar T650i and the S500i slimline slider.

Industry-wide collaboration supports next-generation removable flash memory card and embedded memory solution at JEDEC

Micron Technology, Inc., Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Sony Ericsson, Spansion Inc., STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments announced today that they support the creation of a far-ranging industry specification for removable memory cards and embedded memory solutions being standardized by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association (JEDEC), a leading open-standards organization in the semiconductor industry. JEDEC is well known for its expertise in the standardization of component technologies and solutions.
The new specification, dubbed Universal Flash Storage (UFS), reflects the industry's need for a universal memory solution that removes the need for adaptors to accommodate different removable memory card sizes.
Widespread demand for higher densities and higher performance, plus the surging popularity of multimedia content, is accelerating the need for advanced memory solutions as removable card or embedded formats. UFS will provide a revolutionary leap towards supporting very low access times required for memories, as well as enabling high-speed access to large multimedia files, while reducing power-consumption in consumer electronic (CE) devices. The target performance level is expected to be a significant advancement beyond that of the varied flash cards popular today. Today, users experience a three-minute access time for a 90-minute (4 Gigabyte) high-definition movie; with the new standard, this would be reduced to a few seconds.
Major applications such as mobile handsets, digital still cameras and other CE devices will benefit from the convenience of a universal open standard based specification that is intended to reduce the time-consuming process of enabling interoperability among the various types of removable and embedded memory solutions at the system level. UFS is planned to provide consumers in the future with the convenience of a unified removable memory card that can be shared among various mobile, portable and other CE devices without the need for any adaptors.
The UFS standard is expected to be finalized in 2009.

Innovative 'Green' Base Station Site Concept

The modern design, from renowned Scandinavian architect Thomas Sandell, is a completely new approach to site architecture - the 5m-diameter, 40m-high flexible concrete tower encapsulates all radio base station equipment, including the antennas.
The aesthetics of the site concept, named the Ericsson Tower Tube, have been further enhanced by the choice of construction materials. The flexible concrete tower can be colored and branded to the operator's specific needs to either blend in with its surroundings or become an attractive landmark for the local community.
And the concrete itself has a lower environmental impact than traditional steel, producing 30 percent less CO2 emissions during production and transportation.
Diverging from standard design, the radio base station is placed at the top of the tower cutting the distance between it and the antenna. This gives capacity and coverage benefits for the cellular network and can together with the fact that no active cooling is needed reduce energy consumption up to 40 percent.
Furthermore, as the new design occupies less land, 60-75 percent less than conventional sites, site acquisition is easier. Being a self-contained structure, operators can also avoid the need for security fences and the cost of maintaining and patrolling them.
Ulf Ewaldsson, Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio, Ericsson, says: "The appearance of radio base station sites has not really been considered before. They have essentially been a steel tower and a container surrounded by a chain-link fence.

"With this new approach, we not only create a more attractive look for this essential piece of community architecture, but we have also developed a design that is better for the environment and more cost-efficient to run."

About Thomas Sandell
Thomas Sandell is one of Scandinavia's most celebrated architects and designers. His work is known globally thanks to collaboration with clients such as Electrolux, Capellini, Helly Hansen and IKEA. Sandell is a member of the board of the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. His most recent project is the controversial development of a circular bathhouse in Stockholm.
