World’s First HSDPA TD-SCDMA Mobile Handset

ZTE Corporation announced the U990 device, the world’s first high-end HSDPA TD-SCDMA mobile handset. The new handset was first unveiled last week during a historic event hosted by the company to celebrate the corporate milestone of reaching a remarkable sales record of 100 million handsets. The U990 is ZTE’s third high-end TD-SCDMA mobile handset model and will soon be available on the market. The two other previous models were the U980 and U981.

The new U990 has a high-speed transmission rate of up to 2.8 Mbps, the fastest transmission speed amoung the TD-SCDMA terminals available in the industry, offering consumers the best possible mobile experience. The new model supports dual mode TD-SCDMA/EDGE allowing seamless transitions between the two networks. Its HSDPA speed is capable of reaching 2.8Mbps for downlink transmission and 384kbps for uplink transmission, ensuring high-speed HSDPA service under TD-SCDMA network infrastructure in China.

The U990 handset runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system and is the first ZTE handset integrated with a Microsoft OS. It combines the features of the high-end Smartphone and the efficiency of TD-SCDMA HSDPA data transmission speed. ZTE’s U990 is a 3G mobile handset device that adopts advanced touch-screen technology and is equipped with both GPS/AGPS navigation technologies that further enhance user mobile experience.

In addition, high-end business travelers will be able to take advantage of U990’s Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) features, a backwards-compatible digital mobile phone technology that allows improved data transmission rates.

“We are proud to be the first company in the industry to offer HSPDA mobile handset with TD-SCDMA intelligence it is truly another significant achievement for our handset business. Our technology know-how and excellent product offering reaffirm our leading position in the mobile handset area. We are introducing this home-grown technology to the worldwide market to provide end users with the best mobile experience,” said Mr. He Shiyou, Executive Vice President of ZTE Corporation.

At the 100 Millionth Handset Sales Ceremony, ZTE unveiled its global strategic plan in expanding to the 3G high-end market. As part of this strategy, the company has forged partnerships with the top 10 3G telecom operators, demonstrating a tremendous breakthrough in Europe, North America and Japan. ZTE played a significant role in offering advanced telecoms services by obtaining 30% of the bid in the previous two TD-SCDMA terminal tenders in China.

ZTE has also been supporting major international events, the most recent one of which was the successful 2008 Beijing Olympics held in August 2008. ZTE was the largest supplier of TD-SCDMA handsets for the Olympics, supplying about 30% of the purchase order placed by China Mobile, making the company the biggest 3G provider of both network infrastructure and handsets of the global sporting event. The handset division was one of ZTE's fastest growing units last year, with year-on-year sales revenues growing by 69.16%, shipping over 30 million handsets in 2007.

With accelerating market growth and ZTE’s strong terminal capabilities, the company has successfully gained the trust and recognition of various leading multinational telecom operators, solidifying its leading position in the global mobile handset industry. ZTE will strive to continue leveraging on the success of other global 3G telecom vendors to help promote and develop China’s 3G handset market.

World's First Mobile Phone with Built-in Intelligent Key

Nissan Motor Company, NTT DOCOMO and Sharp Corporation announced that they have jointly developed a mobile phone capable of functioning as an intelligent key for automobiles - a world's first. The device will incorporate Nissan's Intelligent Key system, already a standard feature in various Nissan vehicles.

Mobile Phone with Built-in Intelligent Key (Prototype)

The convergence of automotive and cellular technologies was made possible by DOCOMO's expertise in the marketability of mobile phones, Sharp's development of the phone itself and Nissan's provision of technical support to ensure the key's operability with its vehicles.

Nissan's Intelligent Key system, installed in more than 950,000 units of various Nissan models*2 since 2002, employs two-way wireless communications technology to automatically unlock/lock*3 the car door and start/stop the engine. Nissan and Sharp has now integrated these electronic intelligent-key, wireless communications and electromagnetic technologies into the new handset.

As mobile phones increasingly become a daily necessity, the integration of these technologies*4 and the potential to further expand related functionality helped to bring together the three parties, who expect users to appreciate the seamlessly integrated features of their new handset.

Nissan, DOCOMO and Sharp will demonstrate this mobile phone with built-in Intelligent Key in their respective exhibits at CEATEC Japan 2008, which begins September 30*5. The three firms will continue to develop the product with an aim for commercial distribution in early fiscal year 2009.

Sonin Tough Phone ?

The toughphone from Sonim is pretty tough, however a new challenger from another company has surfaced that not only promises to be hard enough to withstand a good beating but adds a load of extra features to boot.

Called the LM801, the brightly coloured yellow and black handset is rugged, water- and dust-proof and as we were shown at IFA in Berlin capable of being thrown about.

Tech specs read like a camping list. There is an electronic compass, an altimeter, barometer, thermometer, MP3 player, and FM radio.
