LG Chooses Cypress’s TrueTouch Touchscreen Solution

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced that LG Electronics has selected Cypress’s TrueTouch™ touchscreen solution to implement the elegant, easy-to-use capacitive touchscreen interface in its new KS360 mobile handset. With the flexible and programmable

TrueTouch solution, based on the PSoC® programmable system-on-chip architecture, LG designers had a wide variety of touchscreen and LCD materials and vendors to choose from to create the design. The projected capacitive touchscreen provides a next-generation user interface for optimal management of applications.

The KS360 phone has a sliding QWERTY keypad and specialized messaging application features that enable users to send SMS, IM, email and access social networking sites, all from one device. To make messaging easier, the screen automatically rotates 90 degrees using accelerometer technology once the full length keypad has been opened.

The KS360 also comes with a 2MP camera and MicroSD card slot. Cypress’s TrueTouch™ touchscreen solution enables OEMs to utilize a full portfolio of Cypress-developed single-touch and multi-touch gestures, such as tapping an application to open, panning through photo albums, scrolling down an e-mail, and rotating and pinching pictures.

Cypress also provides multi-touch capability for up to 10 fingers for more complex applications including virtual keyboard and gaming. This capability provides touchscreen designers with the most freedom to create new and creative interfaces for mobile handsets, portable media players, GPS systems and other products. Additional information about the TrueTouch solution is available at www.cypress.com/go/pr/TrueTouch. “The compact size and sliding capability of the KS360 required a flexible touchscreen solution,” said Ji Hoon Jeong, Project Leader at LG.

“Cypress’s TrueTouch touchscreen solution allowed us to work with the touchscreen and LCD vendors of our choice to get the exact look and feel we wanted.” “We are pleased to work with a leader such as LG to bring the sleek, dynamic KS360 phone to market,” said Dhwani Vyas, vice president of PSoC CapSense™ and Touchscreen Business Unit at Cypress. “With increasing demand for a wide variety of touchscreens, we believe the flexibility of the Cypress TrueTouch solution is ideally positioned to enable the next generation of touchscreen products.”

Digicel announces Coral-200-Solar low cost solar powered

Digicel Group has launched the Coral-200-Solar, the world’s first low-cost solar-powered mobile phone. The Coral-200-Solar, manufactured by ZTE, uses proprietary technology from Dutch-based innovator Intivation.

Digicel Coral-200-Solar Since early 2008, Digicel has been providing its customers with low-cost or free portable solar chargers in many markets. The concept of linking charger devices and a phone at the point of sales has been a proven success.

Now, with the launch of the Coral-200-Solar with an integrated solar charger built into the phone, Digicel takes the initiative to an even higher level. There are an estimated two billion people in the world who have limited or no access to electricity.

The population of many emerging markets in which Digicel provides cellular services will benefit greatly by access to a mobile handset that can be powered by the sun, or by electric power when it is available. Tom Bryant, Digicel Group VP Distribution Procurement comments; “Solar-powered handsets are clearly the way to meet the needs of power-challenged users across the globe.

While the idea of solar-powered handsets has been around for some time, it has taken the leadership of Digicel and the technology and manufacturing skills of its partners Intivation and ZTE to make the Coral-200-Solar handset a reality.

This marks another first for Digicel and we think our customers are going to love this great device.” Mr Xiong Hui, VP of ZTE’s handset division says: “As mobile phones continue to proliferate in emerging markets and are widely used where electricity is available, mobile operators are demanding more innovative handsets. We are confident that the Digicel Coral-200-Solar is such a product and that solar power technology can be used in any type of handset.

We are pleased to provide this handset with Digicel and Intivation. It will help millions of consumers worldwide to use mobile phones more conveniently and the technology is more environment-friendly.” Digicel will begin to deploy the Coral-200-Solar in selected markets from this June.

Mobile Phones Will Replace Office Desk Phones in North America

Enterprises in North America will be supporting more mobile phones than desktop phones by 2011, according to Gartner. The firms analysts said that although most users will still also have a desktop phone, mobile phones will become more prevalent and replace desktop voice hardware to become the primary device.

“The adoption and standardization of corporate liable mobile phones in the enterprise has been driven by the use of smartphones, wireless e-mail and the integration of these phones into IP telephony systems, while improved in-building coverage and lower mobile service costs have also played a part.,” said Phil Redman, research vice president at Gartner.

Mr. Redman said that as spending on mobile communications services grows, and soon overtakes that of wired voice services, enterprises will need to plan how they manage usage, support and costs. Although mobile hardware costs are generally less than desktops, mobile services can still cost five times more than an enterprise-wired call and this could represent a huge shift in budget for enterprise communications services.

Gartner recommends a four-step plan for enterprises to ensure a smooth transition to mobility:

1. Plan - It’s important to plan how and when the enterprise will support mobile technologies in the enterprise, decide who gets mobile voice and data and what the impact on cost structure will be. Many providers are willing to add additional wireless coverage for little or no cost, although this may mean consolidating to a primary provider to get the best deals and to ensure that everyone has the same carrier. As this transition occurs, Gartner advises using network convergence and services that transcend fixed and mobile service plans. Enterprises should also be aware that more capable mobile phones will drive the need to support other applications, which could impact other IT areas such as application development or security and their budgets.

2. Procure - During the next few years, contract negotiation is a good time to institute new fixed and mobile plans. Enterprises should look at zoned billing, flat-rate unlimited and mobile-to-mobile to reduce the cost of cellular calling. In the U.S., Gartner is starting to see, for large enterprises, bundled, unlimited flat-rate calling for voice and data services that are up to 25 percent off list prices. Lower service-costs will be a big driver for moving traffic from fixed to mobile

3.Manage - As the transition from fixed to mobile occurs, enterprises need to have a solid policy that addresses usage, costs, standards and security. IT working with the business groups should specify exactly who gets mobile services and how much will be spent in a thorough mobile policy. Mobile device platforms should be standardized so that application development and support can be centralized and easier managed. Enterprises also need to prepare the help desk for supporting a more challenging user, which could mean employing specialized technicians.

4.Remove - Organizations should have policies and procedures to remove unnecessary desk phones to reduce hardware and operating costs. This will ensure that the user has a one-number service, a softphone and a single voice mail, so that he or she can efficiently work without a desk phone. Gartner suggests making an annual count so that licensing fees can be rectified to reduce costs and surplus desk phones used for incoming nonmobile users.

Ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) manufacturers need to add support for wide-area wireless networks in order for the devices to fulfill their full market potential, reports In-Stat.

Embedding a wide-area wireless modem into devices addresses the frustration many users have with the spotty coverage of Wi-Fi, the high-tech market research firm says. However, supporting the multiple cellular protocols is difficult and costly.

“The challenge is which of the broadband options: WiMAX, EV-DO, HSPA, or LTE, will be most successful in a UMPC,” says Frank Dickson, Vice President, Mobile Internet group. “Each has pros and cons. There is no ‘best’ wide-area wireless technology.”

Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

  • UMPCs will increasingly add support for wide-area wireless to supplement Wi-Fi. The connect rate for wide-area wireless will grow from 20% today to almost 50% by 2012.
  • In-Stat’s end-user survey revealed that 44% of notebook PC users express frustration with coverage when using Wi-Fi, compared with just 15% using a cellular broadband service.
  • Competitors are experimenting with business models and subsidies. AT&T Mobility and RadioShack recently initiated a consumer offer for a subsidized Acer Aspire UMPC coupled with a broadband service plan.

The research, UMD Connectivity: Add 3G Cellular, WiMAX, Or Punt (#IN0804126UMD), covers the worldwide market for ultra-mobile devices and wide-area connectivity. It provides:

  • Forecasts for UMPC unit sales by connectivity through 2012
  • Analysis of consumer survey data
  • Examination of connectivity options
  • Implications for UMPC manufacturers

New Arrivals in the World's Most Successful Mobile Phone Range

Nokia today announced the Nokia 6700 classic, the Nokia 6303 classic and the Nokia 2700 classic, three devices that build on the formula that made Nokia the world leader in mobile phones. The new trio combines the functionality and user experience required in today's hectic times, with premium designs and materials that make them the most beautiful, well built and competitively priced offerings available.

Leading the new collection is the Nokia 6700 classic (left), which continues the legacy of one of the company's most successful products, the Nokia 6300. "The Nokia 6300 raised the bar in terms of design and premium materials when it arrived in 2006 and topped all sales records for a mid-range mobile phone. The Nokia 6700 moves that bar even higher with a beautiful, slim design and perfectly balanced practicality," said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. "Our new arrival shares the same 'DNA' as its predecessor and we believe that it will be one of our best selling devices in 2009," continued Petersen.

The Samsung Show(W7900) is the newly announced mobile from Samsung, which will be launching soon in Korea (with the rest of the world to follow).

The video below shows the Samsung Show in action !

2008 : Year of the Smartphone

US 2008 proved to be a Year of Two Halves. In the first half, mobile handset shipments happily chugged along at ~14% YoY. In the second half, 3Q handset shipments slowed to 8% before crashing into the Red in 4Q with -10%.

The underlying root cause? “Sheer fear sapped the confidence of consumers, enterprises and corporate users across the board,” says Jake Saunders, Asia-Pacific Vice-President of ABI Research. “As a result, 2008 signed out the year with 1.21 billion handsets shipped for an annual growth of 5.4%. Just a year ago we had +16%”.

*Nokia 38.6%

*Samsung 16.2%

*LG 8.3%

*Sony Ericsson 8.0%

*Motorola 8.3%

*RIM 1.9%

*Kyocera 1.4%

*Apple iPhone 1.1%

*HTC 1.1%

*Sharp 1.0%

*Other 14.1%

2008 was very much a Year of Winners and Losers:

* The largest gainer in market-share was Samsung with an increase of +2.7% (2008: 16.2%). Samsung had a faultless four quarters, driven by handsets such as the Omnia and Ultra series.

* The next significant gainer was Nokia with +1.8% (38.6%). Most of those gains, however, were secured in the first half of the year. Market-share started to slide in the second half and 4Q in particular as emerging market growth stalled.

* LG secured a +1.5% increase for an 8.3% share, in particular gaining significant traction in the North American market.

* “While those three manufacturers dominate the global market, it probably would not come as a surprise to many that RIM (Blackberry) and Apple (iPhone) boldly moved up in the market-share stakes with growths of 0.9% and 0.8% respectively,” notes Kevin Burden, Practice Director for Mobile Devices. Despite the tough economic climate, these two players are likely to continue their march to the consumer centre-stage but it in a way that does not drop their handset ASPs to bargain basement levels. HTC was late entering the consumer smartphone market with the Android-based G1, but the vendor has significant contracts in place (such as T-Mobile) which should play to the its advantage in 2009.

* The vendor with the most significant loss in market-share was Motorola with –5.1% in 2008 (8.3%). This is an improvement on 2007 in which the firm suffered a –7.8% drop, but it underscores the urgency for Sanjay Jha and Motorola’s senior management to deliver robust selling products in 2009. It will be a tough year for Motorola but it needs to deliver handsets that draw back the once faithful Motorola purchaser before it is truly too late. The challenge is that purchasers in 2009 will be very, very picky.

* Sony-Ericsson also stumbled in the mid part of 2008 with a -0.7% contraction in market-share. The release of Experia 1X in 4Q and related smartphone products could help the vendor improve market share in 2009.

“Sharp revisions to country-by-country economic conditions in the space of just three months will likely mean that a YoY handset shipment contraction of between -5% and -10% is becoming a distinct possibility,” concludes Saunders. “What is certain is that handset vendors will be trying to convince everyone they should own a smartphone. Welcome to the Year of Smartphone”.

"Our new arrival shares the same 'DNA' as its predecessor and we believe that it will be one of our best selling devices in 2009," continued Petersen.

The Nokia 6700 combines smooth surfaces, rich materials and precisely crafted parts with a full metal keymat which completes the premium finish. Improving on all areas of its forerunner, the Nokia 6700 comes with a 5 megapixel camera, assisted GPS navigation with Nokia Maps, and high speed data access meaning sharing images or video is faster and easier than ever. At an estimated retail price of EUR 235, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6700 addresses the original Nokia 6300 customer need and aspiration level perfectly.

At an estimated retail price of EUR 135, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6303 classic is ideal for people that see the current value proposition of the Nokia 6300. The 3.2 megapixel camera comes to life on the large 2.2 inch screen, and with pre-loaded Nokia Maps, the Nokia 6303 combines a long list of features with excellent battery performance. Added to everything else, people can plug any music accessory into the standard 3.5 mm audio jack and have a fully fledged mobile music player able to carrythousands of their favorite tracks.

Rounding off the new arrivals is the Nokia 2700 classic (right) which, at and estimated price of EUR 65 before taxes and subsidies, is one of Nokia's most affordable, full featured handsets. Offering up to 2GB of storage via the memory card slot, the phone also has an integrated digital music player and a 2.0 megapixel camera, making it equally competent for imaging and music. "These features mean people can save, access and share files in hundreds of formats via Nokia's onlineservice, Share on Ovi, or a number of other websites.

The rich features and simple interface mean that in many cases, the Nokia 2700 classic will provide its owner's first Internet experience," concluded Petersen. All three devices are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2009.
