Sharp Develops Super-Thin 2.2 Inch LCD for Mobile Phones

Sharp Corporation has successfully developed a 2.2-inch super-thin LCD for mobile devices with a thickness of only 0.68 mm, the industry's thinnest.

Mobile devices such as mobile phones and digital cameras are rapidly becoming thinner as manufacturers strive to improve portability and offer consumers more stylish designs. As a result, thinner embedded components such as LCDs are also increasing in demand. In addition, the increase in demand for One-Seg (terrestrial digital broadcast) compatible handsets is leading to demands for greater visibility and higher image quality in displays intended for mobile devices.

iPhone Contains Hazardous Chemicals and Materials, says Greenpeace

Apple’s iPhone contains hazardous chemicals and materials, according to the results of scientific tests commissioned by Greenpeace and released today. This is the first testing of an Apple product following the commitment by Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, to a ‘Greener Apple’, in May 2007.

An independent scientific laboratory tested 18 internal and external components of the iPhone and confirmed the presence of brominated compounds in half the samples, including in the phone’s antenna, in which they (1) made up 10 per cent of the total weight of the flexible circuit board. A mixture of toxic phthalate esters (2) was found to make up 1.5 per cent of the plastic (PVC) coating of the headphone cables.

The insight into the components of the iPhone is presented in the Greenpeace report, ‘Missed call: the iPhone’s hazardous chemicals’ (3). This is the third time that Greenpeace has tested an Apple product since 2006. Similar analyses of a MacBook Pro and an iPod Nano also revealed the presence of brominated flame retardants and PVC in some components.

Apple launched the iPhone into the US market in June 2007. The discovery of hazardous chemicals suggests that Apple is failing to make early progress, even in entirely new product lines, towards achieving its commitment to phase-out all uses of brominated compounds and PVC by the end of 2008.

“Steve Jobs has missed the call on making the iPhone his first step towards greening Apple’s products” said Zeina Alhajj, Greenpeace International toxics campaigner. “It seems that Apple is far from leading the way for a green electronics industry as competitors like Nokia already sell mobile phones free of PVC.”

Dr. David Santillo, Senior Scientist at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories, co-ordinated the project and deconstructed the iPhone for analysis. He said, “Two of the phthalate plasticisers found at high levels in the headphone cable are classified as “toxic to reproduction, category 2” because of their long-recognised ability to interfere with sexual development in mammals. While they are not prohibited in mobile phones, these phthalates are banned from use in all toys or childcare articles sold in Europe. Apple should eliminate the use of these chemicals from its products range.”

During its analysis, Greenpeace also found that the iPhone’s battery was, unusually, glued and soldered in to the handset. This hinders battery replacement and makes separation for recycling, or appropriate disposal, more difficult, and therefore adds to the burden of electronic waste.

“Apple needs to re-invent its iPhone…in green,” continued Alhajj. “The company needs to design out all hazardous substances and materials from its products so that a real solution is found for the growing mountain of e-waste,” concluded Alhajj. “Whether the iPhone model due for European release in November 2007 also relies on brominated internal components and PVC is a question Steve Jobs needs to answer.”

Motorola RAZR 2 V8 Phone Review

Sharper RAZR 2 Moto

Motorola’s RAZR 2 V8 updates the familiar RAZR brand with a sharp new look, but is that enough to win consumers over? 3G.co.uk finds out.

With the release of the well-equipped Nokia N95 and the innovative, much-anticipated Apple iPhone, mobile manufacturers are having to make sure they’re not left behind. Following the success of its breakthrough handset, the RAZR V3 (a handset that continues to sell well even today), Motorola has launched its follow-up, the RAZR 2 V8.

Even the packaging of the V8 gives you the feeling you’re about to experience a well-groomed handset. Once you’ve pulled the golden ribbon, the V8’s box transforms, before popping up to reveal the shiny handset in all its glory. The phone looks fantastic with its glossy metal front finish and two-inch external screen. In truth, it’s not too dissimilar to its predecessor – although Motorola has managed to make it 2mm thinner – and this is not such a bad thing. The V8 has still got that slick feel we’ve come to love with the various RAZRs and, although 55mm wide, it surpasses most handsets and still fits neatly in your palm.

The V8 is a tough little cookie. The internal frame is made of stainless steel that makes it durable yet relatively light at 117g. And the exterior screen is made with chemically hardened glass, which is incredibly scratch resistant. Given its appealing shine, the handset is susceptible to grubby fingerprints on both the screen and the exterior.

"The iPhone is a marvelous product and will change how people think about mobile. I'm delighted that it is launching in France through Orange, and I'm sure that our customers share my excitement. Our partnership with Apple is a natural fit because we are two global brands who share the same values of simplicity and innovation. Google Buys Mobile Microblogging Company

Google has bought Finnish startup Jaiku, which makes a mobile phone application people can use to send short messages about where they are and what they're doing. Terms of the acquisition weren't disclosed.

Google believes Jaiku's technology can help develop new ways to use mobile devices, according to a note posted Tuesday on Google's blog by Tony Hsieh, a product manager for the Mountain View-based company.

It hasn't made a formal announcement, but Google reportedly is working on a new operating platform for mobile devices to make it easier for people to access Google products when they're away from their personal computers. Founded last year in Helsinki, Jaiku specializes in mobile phone software that makes it easier to share updates about their whereabouts and thoughts. The concept, known as "microblogging," also is being promoted by another startup, San Francisco-based Twitter.

Google shares soared to a new high of $623.78 Tuesday, before falling back to $615.18, up $5.57 for the day. The company's stock price has reached a new peak in seven of the last 13 trading sessions.

The Most Dangerous File Format?

The newest trend in spam has been the use of new file types attached to spam messages, the favorite format being Adobe's PDF. It has been especially popular in spreading pump-and-dump stock spam. But don't worry! Adobe recently sought to reassure users with this statement: PDF is no more able to embed malware on an unsuspecting user's system than any other typical e-mail attachment.

This may well be true; many typical e-mail attachments are capable of spreading malware. In fact, PDFs were probably chosen by spammers because Word files are infamous as vehicles for malware. It is true that there are no known examples of PDF spam being used to spread malware (though past vulnerabilities in Acrobat Reader let PDFs compromise a PC). PDF spam represents an annoyance more than anything. For now, at least.
