Mobile Phone for Real Time Training

adidas and Samsung announced their strategic partnership and unveiled the first product initiative as a result of the collaboration, called miCoach.

miCoach is a real-time training system designed to motivate, inspire and enable athletes at all levels to reach their training goals, whatever they may be. It is the most advanced interactive training system by collecting and turning personal data into individual training plans based on one’s fitness level and specific goals. This unique partnership combines the expertise of Samsung in mobile technology and communications with adidas’ leadership in innovation for sport.

“miCoach is an exemplary manifestation of the adidas brand message of innovation and inspiration,” said President and CEO of the adidas brand, Erich Stamminger. “adidas has been a leader in the sports industry for more than 80 years, and the miCoach initiative with Samsung continues this tradition in an effort to inspire and enable athletes at all levels.”

“Samsung and adidas share a love of sports that transcends different cultures, industries and technologies” said IS Kim, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics Europe. “Samsung’s world class cutting-edge design and technical skills are the perfect match for adidas’ sporting excellence. Together, we can help sports enthusiasts of all ages and abilities to unleash their true potential and have fun doing it.”

Research and development for miCoach began over two years ago between the adidas Innovation Team and Samsung, with the objective of creating the most advanced and customizable training product in the marketplace. With input from the Athletes’ Performance Institute (API), an elite training and sport research centre based at Arizona State University, miCoach is like having your own personal coach with you on every run; a coach who knows
exactly what you want to accomplish and exactly how to help you get there.

“To achieve any goal an athlete needs the best coaching and that’s exactly what miCoach provides; a personal trainer to take him or her through their paces, to be with them every step of the way, guiding them to new fitness levels,” said José Mourinho, a winner of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup with Porto along with two English Premier League titles with Chelsea.

The miCoach system contains five key components which combined provide personalised audible feedback; the miCoach Samsung phone, a heart rate monitor, a stride sensor chip to fit all adidas running footwear, compatible adidas apparel and the miCoach website to create tailored training programmes.

miCoach is available throughout Europe in adidas and Samsung stores as well as select retail partners starting in mid-March 2008.

Nokia's Morph - a Nanotechnology Concept Device

Morph, a joint nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) - was launched today alongside the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA's official website. Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces.

Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, commented: "Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible." Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia, commented: "We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience.

The research we are carrying out is fundamental to this as we seek a safe and controlled way to develop and use new materials." Professor Mark Welland, Head of the Department of Engineering's Nanoscience Group at the University of Cambridge and University Director of Nokia-Cambridge collaboration added: "Developing the Morph concept with Nokia has provided us with a focus that is both artistically inspirational but, more importantly, sets the technology agenda for our joint nanoscience research that will stimulate our future work together."

The partnership between Nokia and the University of Cambridge was announced in March, 2007 - an agreement to work together on an extensive and long term programme of joint research projects. NRC has established a research facility at the University's West Cambridge site and collaborates with several departments - initially the Nanoscience Center and Electrical Division of the Engineering Department - on projects that, to begin with, are centered on nanotechnology. Elements of Morph might be available to integrate into handheld devices within 7 years, though initially only at the high-end. However, nanotechnology may one day lead to low cost manufacturing solutions, and offers the possibility of integrating complex functionality at a low price.
