Hop-on's '3G Our Phone' vs Apple's 3G iPhone
Hop unveiled its new series of phones today. The phones range from the Disposable HOP1800 phone at $10 to the HOP1809, a true 3G phone for under $125.
Peter Michaels, President of Hop-on, stated, "We are constantly striving to bring the best technology into the hands of the consumer at the lowest price possible. I think we have hit a homerun with our new line of phones, especially the HOP1809."
The HOP1809 compared to the iPhone(TM) is smaller in length and width. With true 3G technology, the HOP1809 offers users a wider range of services than ever before. This includes video calls, wireless data, and faster delivery speeds on both the down and uplink, all in a cool looking, lightweight aluminum sleek phone.
Michaels further stated, "Unlike the iPhone(TM), the camera view finder at the front of the HOP1809 (http://hop-on.com/hop18093g.html) has the capability of facilitating true video conference calls. I'm really excited with this new series."
The 1800 Series of Hop-on phones are in production and will be available everywhere by 3Q 2008. Hop-on will be making its US debut at the MLB All-star game at Yankee stadium in New York City July 14th weekend.

MOTO ROKR E8 Officially Unveiled
Motorola announced regional availability of the award-winning ROKR E8 which transforms from music player to phone with the touch of a button.
Using breakthrough ModeShift™ technology from Motorola, the device presents users with only the controls they need, at the time they need them, instantly transforming from music player to phone with the touch of a button.
“ROKR E8 does not compromise – it’s both an MP3 player that makes great phone calls and a mobile phone with tremendous audio capabilities. With Motorola’s unique ModeShift technology, we’re dispelling the myth that mobile phones with music features are inferior to stand-alone audio devices,” said Stephen Nolan, vice president and general manager, Mobile Devices Europe, Middle East & Africa.
“We are confident consumers will embrace this ground-breaking device and we look forward to transforming their mobile experience by taking them from talk to music in just one touch.”
This confidence is supported by industry acclaim for the ROKR E8 at the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas earlier this year, where it received the CNET Best of CES Award in the Cell Phones and Smartphones category and CNET’s People’s Voice Award.
When powered off, the surface of ROKR E8 is smooth, with no visible keys. Power on the device and it presents a virtual numbered keypad on the front surface. With one “press” of the virtual music key, the phone keypad disappears and control keys for the music player – play, pause, fast forward and rewind – appear in its place.
Yet, ROKR E8 is more than just a “touch”-operated device. Using innovative vibrating haptics technology, the device provides the tactile feedback consumers expect from a traditional keypad, providing confirmation they have pressed a virtual key.
ROKR E8 also marks the debut of the new FastScroll navigation wheel from Motorola, a variable-speed touch control that lets consumers easily scroll through all of the content stored on the device. With a gentle slide of the thumb, the wheel quickly scrolls through your music (music mode), contacts (phone mode), calendar (phone mode), or multimedia (imaging mode) content. Information is easily viewed on the landscape 2.0” QVGA display.
In music mode, ROKR E8 delivers great sound through a three-dimensional stereo feature that enhances two-channel audio and an on-board equaliser. Music can be enjoyed on the built-in speaker, with a compatible Bluetooth® enabled stereo headset1, or through a wired headset plugged into the 3.5mm jack.
ROKR E8 also helps consumers discover new music with a built-in FM radio and support for Song ID2. The 2GB internal memory can store up to 1,600 songs3, and the external memory is expandable up to 4GB with an optional microSD™ card. Music transfers quickly with USB 2.0. The device is compatible with Windows® Media Player® 11 on the PC, which also provides access to more than 200 online music stores.
In phone mode, ROKR E8 provides outstanding voice quality using Motorola CrystalTalk™ technology. The powerful device can receive calls while downloading or playing music, text messaging2, surfing the Web2 or taking pictures. Quality construction and materials help make ROKR E8 durable and reliable, and a high gloss front, aluminium soft touch back, spun metal side keys and engraved banding offer the modern style expected from Motorola.

Apple Introduces the New iPhone 3G
Apple introduced the new iPhone 3G, combining all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast* as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK. In the US the new iPhone 3G is priced at a stunning $199 for the 8GB model, and just $299 for the 16GB model.** iPhone 3G will be available in more than 70 countries later this year, beginning with customer availability in 22 countries—Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US—on July 11.
“Just one year after launching the iPhone, we’re launching the new iPhone 3G that is twice as fast at half the price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “ iPhone 3G supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync right out of the box, runs the incredible third party apps created with the iPhone SDK, and will be available in more than 70 countries around the world this year.”
iPhone 3G gives users ever faster access to the Internet and email over their cellular network with quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA for voice and data connectivity around the world. iPhone 3G supports Wi-Fi, 3G and EDGE networks and automatically switches between them to ensure the fastest possible download speeds. The new iPhone 3G also makes it easier to multi-task with simultaneous voice and data communications, so with iPhone 3G you can browse the web, get map directions, or check your email while you are on a call.
iPhone 3G includes the new iPhone 2.0 software with both the iPhone SDK and key enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to provide over-the-air push email, contact and calendar syncing as well as remote wipe and Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to corporate networks. The iPhone SDK allows developers to create amazing applications that leverage the iPhone’s groundbreaking Multi-Touch™ user interface, animation technology, accelerometer and GPS technology on the world’s most advanced mobile platform.
iPhone 3G includes the new App Store, providing iPhone users with native applications in a variety of categories including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it is accessible from just about anywhere, so you can purchase and download applications wirelessly and start using them instantly. Some applications are even free and the App Store notifies you when application updates are available. The App Store will be available in 62 countries at launch.
Additional features available with the iPhone 2.0 software include the ability to do real-time mapping and track your progress with GPS technology, mass move and delete multiple email messages, search for contacts, access a new scientific calculator, turn on parental control restrictions for specified content, save images directly from a web page or email them to your iPhone and easily transfer them back to your photo library on your Mac® or PC. iPhone 3G delivers an amazing 10 hours of talk time on 2G networks and 5 hours using 3G, with up to 5 to 6 hours of web browsing, up to 7 hours for video playback and up to 24 hours for audio playback.
iPhone 3G takes advantage of MobileMe™, a new Internet service that pushes email, contacts, and calendars from an online “cloud” to native applications on iPhone, iPod® touch, Macs and PCs. With MobileMe email, messages are pushed instantly to iPhone, removing the need to manually check email and wait for downloads, and push keeps contacts and calendars continuously up-to-date so changes made on one device are automatically updated on other devices. With iPhone, you can even snap a photo and post it directly to a MobileMe Gallery to share with friends and family.
iPhone 3G will be available in the US on July 11 for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 8GB model and $299 (US) for the 16GB model in both Apple and AT&T’s retail stores and requires a new two year contract with AT&T for qualifying customers. iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes® 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers. For further information about iPhone 3G pricing and availability in the US and internationally, visit www.apple.com/iphone.

ClearPad Sensor for the SH906i Touchscreen Mobile Phone
Coming from Japan’s number-one phone manufacturer, Sharp, the SH906i is the first ClearPad-enabled touchscreen mobile phone in Japan’s mobile handset market. This new touchscreen flip phone using Synaptics’ intuitive ClearPad technology is available through Japan's premier mobile communications company, NTT DOCOMO.
The SH906i uses Synaptics' ClearPad technology to enable finger-input character recognition capabilities for Japanese character entry. The combination of the SH906i character recognition software and Synaptics ClearPad solution improves usability for regions with more complex alphabets. Capacitive sensing-enabled text entry allows the user to access and control any number of applications and menus on a handheld device in an efficient and intuitive manner — it is fast, easy to use, and accurate without a stylus. Synaptics’ ClearPad sensors recognize a variety of gesture input for an effortless user interface. OEMs can customize their device user interfaces using Synaptics’ growing gesture library, which includes gestures such as flick and pinch. The SH906i, for example, uses flick to flip though channels and adjust volume on its mobile-television application.
As the usage model for mobile phones expands into data services, the real estate and usability for touchscreens becomes more important. Managing greater content requires a more sophisticated and efficient user interface. Synaptics is taking a proactive stance to understand how these mobile trends affect the usage of a phone. Synaptics' ClearPad technology allows flexible and intuitive user interfaces to be offered to the end user.
John du Pre Gauntt, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report “Japan Wireless: Marketing to a Mobile Society” said “Flat-rate pricing for 3G services and broadening the scope of industries with a strong interest in mobile services means that mobile marketing and advertising has become all the more important in Japan.”
“Synaptics' long history in capacitive sensing technology is a valuable asset as we continue to innovate for enhanced usability,” said Yoshi Maeda, president of Synaptics Japan. “We are thrilled to work with leaders such as Sharp and NTT DOCOMO. Japan represents an important market for Synaptics – we are expanding our team in Tokyo to support this region and meet the needs of the burgeoning mobile market.”
The ClearPad solution is part of Synaptics' growing ClearTouch™product portfolio. ClearTouch products are designed for durability, low power consumption, and easy integration into mobile devices. Patented ClearPad technology builds on the capacitive touch sensing technology used in more than 400 million TouchPad™ devices. Synaptics has more than a decade of experience in clear, two-dimensional, capacitive touch sensing. All ClearTouch solutions can operate under glass or plastic, resulting in robust devices with slim form factors and sleek industrial designs.
